Magento Vs Shopify

Who Will Win?

Shopify is the most popular e-commerce platform these days and is being adopted rapidly by the small to medium companies. Magento on the other hand is an established shopping cart software which has been around for a while now and has some really strong features. To decide which one will win out long term, we need to compare them in terms of speed, flexibility, security and cost. We’ll first start off by discussing their similarities before moving onto their differences and then try and conclude with which one comes out as the winner between Magento Vs Shopify .

In this article we will discuss how they are similar:

Both have excellent templates the user interface of both are very intuitive Both use PayPal for accepting online payments Both have SEO options for free Both have mobile apps available

How are they different?

While Shopify would be a great solution for small and medium scale businesses, Magento would be the ideal choice if you’re looking to run an e-commerce website or want to boost your existing online business. The following section will discuss some of their differences:

Magento is open source software while Shopify uses its own proprietary code/software If you’re trying to sell products on multiple platforms then Shopify is the way to go since it caters to everyone from independent stores all the way up through large chains but if your focus is more on customizing content on your site then Magento might suite better Your development team has access to edit any part of the Magento open source code so enhancements can be made with great ease If you want to build a customized e-commerce site then Magento will suit your needs better since it has a large community of developers and designers who contribute in making code changes

There is no doubt that both the platforms have their own pros and cons.

A few months ago I was meeting up with an entrepreneur, an old friend of mine, who had started on Amazon doing some arbitrage business. It’s now been about 6 months and he has more than doubled his revenue.   He sat me down and went through his sales over the last 3-4 months. They were blowing up!   He said: “Arjun, I’m not gonna lie to you, it’s been a tough few months. We’ve had sleepless nights, but I’m glad I chose Magento.” What he was saying to me is that his journey was easier than it would have been with Shopify – and that makes all the difference.

Shopify is great if you just need a platform for your store; a plug-and-play solution with built in traffic generation tools. But as Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff said: “If you want to build a $100m business then you don’t go for the Fast Lane – you go for Enterprise because Enterprise lasts longer! “”Don’t sell yourself short” is another way of saying it.

We worked on several Shopify projects over the last 4 years and each time we used to say “never again”. I am not saying that Shopify is a bad platform. It’s great for E-commerce newbies; it is very fast and very easy to get going with, but once you’ve hit the ceiling there, where do you go? We built for one of our clients an enterprise level eCommerce site on Magento – and he grew his business by more than 3X in 6 months.

Magento vs Shopify – The Final Verdict:

A great thing about these two platforms is that they’re both free! So if you’re just starting out then there are no barriers or costs to prevent you from giving them a try.

Shopify would be the better option if you’re just starting out and don’t want to worry about software issues or want a plug-and-play solution. If you’re looking for more customization options, have more sophisticated features on your site or are willing to pay more for higher level support then Magento would be a better choice. In the end as with any project it depends on how well prepared you are to invest in the success of your company and how much risk you are willing to take along the way.

For me – I’m always going for Enterprise!
